just a note
« on: November 05, 2009, 06:52:00 PM »
Ok, i just wanna tell a bit bout my thoughts. I gotta tell the long story:
I started of with PC`s bout 3 or four years ago: win98 and do a bit of text-editing/writing (no net, no multimedia etc. just plain writing).
Then, two years ago , i bought a new PC, 1.6 Gh and 1 GB, with XP, and a months later it was replaced by Kubuntu/Mandriva dual-boot.
After a year i got tired of it and changed over to Debian (kubuntu made use of kde4 at that time) I used gnome for a while, but then changed over to fluxbox. I tried some other wm`s, one of them e16.
After a short while i heard bout e17 and tried to install it. It was really difficult, but it worked somehow.
I cant say i really liked it, it was more a competition between me and e17: would i be able to use it at all.

That might have been half a year ago. I used e17 and fluxbox (as a rescue-wm) and got - somehow- used to it. I used it with desktop independent applications (xfe, geany, roxterm , tilda, etc, etc.).

So, the long story ends here, two weeks ago i got tired of all those apps which dont fit togethter in look and feel, and i installed a gnome-core metapackage. That way i got lots of apps which fit togethter without the need to think about it.
I boot now and then into gnome and i like it. Its cool. for me.

But i have to say: once i am used to e17, i got the feeling that something is missing in gnome. I cant say what it is. It just seems "plain". It seems as if one dimension would be missing. I cant tell what it is. sorry, its mystic, i know.

So, why all that ranting?
Its a pitty e17 aint used by more users. Thats all.

ah yes: and im installing e17 on top of karma at this very moment. I hope all will work fine...but am confident. I havent had much of trouble with e17 for a while now (ok: ecomorph is still giving me the business)

greetings and thanks for a cool "script"

I'll tell ya what's missing in gnome, it's enlightenment. Did you know that back in the day enlightenment was the window manager for gnome.

lol. I should have expected such an answer.
Now that you say i seem to remember i heard about e being the window-manager of gnome... not that sure about that.

I have added e16 as the window-manager to gnome in virtualbox and it fits quite well. But e16 is not that easy to configure (e.g. i couldnt find any themes) and im not sure bout its future.

it might be "hard" to get used to e17, but samewise its not that easy getting rid of it too....

as said: it was just a bit of ranting on a rainy day
greetings

btw: apt-get install e17-svn from OzOs on top of karma went through like a charme within a few blinks of my eyes.

I know what ya mean 'bout trying to get ride of e17. It requires so much time & effort to get it just so (I'm not talking an apt-get install stock e17, that's something new) that it's hard to just forget 'bout.

Iirc, it was e16 that was the wm for gnome, might have been an earlier version though.

Wow, I just installed e16 from the Sid repo, and that's not the e16 I remember. It's pretty bare bones. The debian repos used to also have the four stock default themes as well, but not now. If you go here you'll see some screenshots I made for CnR. Also, this sight has a boat load of themes, themes.effx.us. Hum, I might have to keep this for a wee bit, just for old times sake.

Cheers

ah yes: and im installing e17 on top of karma at this very moment. I hope all will work fine...but am confident. I havent had much of trouble with e17 for a while now (ok: ecomorph is still giving me the business)

Within an hour e17 and ecomorph running on karmic. Thanks to you all! The howto on this site on installing ecomorph should be updated though. I followed that, and had to change this:
1. ecomorph-e17 is dead; use ecomorph instead (replace this in all commands, also the git)
2. add ecomorph and ecomp to line 29 where it says "bin_basic= blahblah"

The rest of the howto still results in succes.
I'm not into the new easy_e17.sh script yet; first I added ecomorph and ecomp to the 'extra' part but then easy_e17.sh --install-only didn't work. Should I use another variable for installing extra parts?

Thanks for the report and the correction. I did make the first change, but I do not understand the second one. Could you elaborate.

Ah sorry, I meant the line in easy_e17.sh where ecomorph and ecomp should be added in order to be able to run "easy_e17.sh -s -h --only=ecomp,ecomorph".

Right, OK, I'll add that in a wee bit. Thanks.
