whats up with e17-release?
« on: November 05, 2009, 05:35:27 PM »
i got a simple question:
There have been some threads bout e17 will be kinda released. In my words: it was in a pre-alpha status for a (very long) while, and now will become an "official"-release. Or: it was said to be an unstable window-manager.
If i recall correct the talk was "end of the year" (year 2009)

Its november now.
Are there any news on that?

End of the year (not sure they meant 2009), but that translates into early the next year, say May.

Ah, ok. It seems like some of you read kind of "inside-info", but i dont. So i have thought there would have been announcements about it in the meantime.
thanks

Naw, I read no inside stuff, just history. Has any linux anything ever been released early, let alone on time? Always take the time between the announcement date and the announced release date, double it then add half again.

So as an example to day is 4th Nov 09. I anounc e that I am going to release my brand new foo by the end of the year. That's two months time. Take two months, double it to four months and add half for four, another two and you wind up at six months. The real date of release for my brand new foo will be roughly June 2010 at the earliest. Verstehen Du?

Cheers

I keep my eye on the enlightenment-users mailing list (yes, I have morbid desire to see newbies get roasted) where there is sometimes discussion about preparations for the beta release.  I am too delicate to subscribe to the enlightenment-developers mailing list.

There's been no news lately - but I'm pretty confident they remain on track - there's been a bucket load of translation updates over the past few weeks and only very minor changes to the main packages.  The last freeze did not result in any new .deb packages being delivered through packages.enlightenment.org (I think the current binaries are dated July 09).

Several long-standing bugs have been fixed (remember the crashing Themes Selector? - no more!).  Systray (now a core module) still has a few problems but overall I think the basic packages are pretty good (like 1000% more stable and polished than KDE 4.0 was).  Unfortunately, it does now seem clear that there will be no D-BUS API replacements for all enlightenment_remote functions for quite some time.

Bear in mind that Rasterman's focus is very much on the smart phone and MID market, not so much on the Linux Desktop.  I expect that the "illume" package and other things important to wee devices are getting priority bug fixes and polish rather than the desktop stuff (eg.  The mini Wallpaper2 app seems to be finished now).

Being an Australian, I am very tempted to take bets on a beta release before Xmas but I would probably be breaking the law to do so.  Let's say, I'd only give you even money on a pre-25 December announcement.

Ich versteh kein Wort :-)
english ->
I dont understand a single word.lol
take what and what? and take away what? and then double it? why ? I think i  need to go to school again...
Your german is getting better, isnt it? :-)

ok, kidding aside: BroTiag does magic algebra and says june2010, Aubrey says perhaps before Xmas 2009.
If its in between its not that far away any more, is it?

btw:
i think for the winter i gotta subscribe to the mailing-list, just for the fun of it (seeing other newbies getting roasted  sounds good...). i pretty much liked the hard-core style of the hurd-mailing list, though i didnt understand that much.
