I thought it would be good to gather together any stories/tips/gotchas regarding OzOS on different netbooks/umpcs/mini-notes into a Grand Unified Netbook Thread.

I'm developing an OzOS web page to keep the emerging wisdom in some sort of readily available form.

It is an emerging market and I just saw this article that says:

Quote
At least two “multinational corporations” (translation: Big PC or consumer electronics companies) have agreed to preinstall Ubuntu Netbook Remix edition on forthcoming sub-notebook devices, according to Gerry Carr, a Canonical marketing manager.

In a bold prediction, Carr said Netbooks running Ubuntu would be available in all major U.S. computer retail stores by late 2008 or early 2009. He called the Netbook’s arrival a “rare opportunity for Linux” to succeed as a pre-installed operating system on retail hardware.

I'm still tweaking my Acer netbook but I know earlycj5 has his HP 2133 running OzOS.  It will be interesting to see how compatible the OzOS desktop packages are with the Ubuntu Netbook Remix.  Maybe this weekend, if I'm feeling up to a challenge.

Anybody else mucking around with these?

Smiley (funny pic!)

Yes, it's a great idea an unifying thread on this machines. They becoming quite popular.

I wonder if it would be too hard make a specialized iso or an image to quick install OzOS?...

I'd like to think so - but right now the machines are sufficiently different to have different issues.  Maybe once the Ubuntu Netbook Remix emerges as a pre-installed OS, an OzOS desktop could just slip in over the top.  Right now the netbook remix is just another desktop metapackage and it isn't possible to see how Ubuntu itself will be optimized for these systems.  There are certainly still some boot issues that need to be ironed out before it is as fast as some of the "lite" distros, like Linpus, that come pre-installed.  Sound, webcams and wireless are also problems on many.

BTW, my youngest son came home yesterday with (Windows XP) eeePC 1000.  It is a very nice machine - Atom, 2Gb RAM and an 80Gb HDD - and I hope to grab it while he is asleep this weekend and install Xubuntu/OzOS dual boot. I will report back if I get away with it.

Maybe you could add it to the installation procedure, check the Sabayon installation procedure, they ask you whether your installing it on a laptop, Desktop or Eeepc. You could build a niche and start doing a DVD or CD that asks you during the installation what Netbook your using.  Cool

I think that might be the way to go too, Molom.  It really depends on whether we could "capture" a large enough set of netbook options (cpu, SSD/HDD, wireless, existing OS setup etc. as well as user preferences) to make a useful script to mod the setup on "most" machines.  In most cases, this could actually be done AFTER installation - of either a full OzOS or a base debian distro - provided we had a suitable kernel.

I will use the new "OzOS on Netbooks" page to explore the range of variations and approaches.
