by Rui Pais and CafeLinux out of Ubuntu is a release candidate Live CD Distro showing what can be done with a minimal (X)ubuntu base and the very latest builds of the Enlightenment (E17) desktop manager. OzOS is lightweight and very fast and it is available as both 64bit and 32bit versions as fully installable Live CDs. The OzOS e17 desktop is also available as a "metapackage" that can be installed on most Debian-based distros (those that don't already use e17).
The OzOS philosophy is based on maintaining stability, including only a minimal set of mainly lightweight applications by default and building the e17 desktop from the very latest source code (svn) at the users discretion. By default the e17 installation is basic but very functional and the script that manages the downloading, compilation and updating of the Enlightenment code can be edited to add or remove components available on svn. This way, the user gets a functional e17 desktop and can the choose whether or not they want to experiment with newer, and potentially less stable, e applications that are under heavy (or sporadic) development.
The minimal (X)Ubuntu base for the full CD version provides a access to a wide range of alternative apps which the OzOS team urge users to explore and to build into their own applications library via the Ubuntu and OzOS repositories. OzOS includes its own small utilities and scripts to help the user maintain their e17 desktop despite the bleeding edge e17 svn code that is always in development. A key feature is the OzOS Backup and Restore utility that gives the user the ability to deal easily with problems at the Enlightenment svn if they happen to update on a "bad code day". Updating e17 is at the user's discretion - they can update daily or never. The current (beta) version of OzOS is 0.9 and is based on Ubuntu 8.04 (Hardy). OzOS is the flagship project of CafeLinux (the people who bring you Distropedia), so if we seem a little biased here, well, we are. Support is available at the CafeLinux forums and you can even pick up extra e17 themes, backgrounds and idle gossip there as well.
