OzOS: Get the latest Versions: 64bit and 32bit (version 0.9).
Hope you all enjoy it!

- So whats is Oz OS?
Oz OS it's an Enlightenment (e17) Desktop Linux, built on a minimal Ubuntu base distribution (currently 8.04 "Hardy Heron")
- A little more Enlightenment, please?
OzOS aims to be a lean, elegant and up-to-date implementation of Enlightenment (E17) desktop manager on top of one of the best and most stable Debian Linux distributions - Ubuntu (we actually use the leaner Xubuntu base).
We have minimized the number of pre-installed applications - leaving it to the user to decide which packages to install - via the included Synaptic Package Manager, the command line (apt-get) or online (via our associated "apt:foo" web page)
OzOS also comes with a number of "optional extras" - small applications, themes and other eye-candy designed specifically for OzOS. You can read about Oz-extras here.
The e17 version used in OzOS it's compiled directly from the latest svn source code and all updates will be done at the user's choice and always by compilation of updated code.
The process can be done automatically (by clicking on an icon) or from a terminal offering all kinds of advanced control (specific dates, compiler flags, partial/specific sections of svn, whatever...)
- But why would I want OzOS?
Enlightenment is one of the most stylish and functional Linux desktops. It is "clean" and very fast while having enough eye-candy to please the fashion conscious. It is unlike the more "traditional" window managers and desktop environments such as Gnome, KDE and Xfce. Often considered "difficult" to install and configure - and subject to sometimes rapid development - Enlightenment has been considered a DE for experts (or mad people). That is rapidly changing as E17 settles and becomes more widely adopted.
New users of Enlightenement may still need adaptation time, but we believe that the "effort" is rewarding.

Enlightenment is often packaged with a number of specially developed applications and tools - such as image viewers, media players and a file manager. In the default OzOS installation, these applications are reduced to a minimum and we only include a native e17 application when it has become relatively stable. Users who want to try those applications can easily get and compile them from svn. No need to worry if they are already on some repository or if they are compatible with your e17 version... you make them compatible.
The Xubuntu base is full updatable through Synaptic Package Manager or the usual Debian command line tools. Ubuntu offers all security updates and bug corrections for either eighteen months (Gutsy) or three years (Hardy) from its release. OzOS can use any of Ubuntu's packages. OzOS can also be used side by side with any other Ubuntu desktop. A desktop metapackage is available for easy download and installation (See this How-To)
Support for OzOs is available though the CafeLinux forums, where your questions and suggestions will always be welcome. Support is available though our English, Portuguese and Spanish forums.

- Whats "in-the-box"?
. e17 (always up-to-date)
. build-essential (the full GNU compilers/tools set)
. The Xubuntu 8.04 base system
. SCite (an all-in-one text editor to a mini-IDE)
. Thunar and Terminal
. Firefox and Thunderbird
. The Gimp
and many others...
You can add all you want, from the huge Ubuntu repos, using synaptic, apt or apt:foo from your browser.
The install CD ?
Yes. Just burn the .iso file to a CD. It's a LiveCD (it runs fully from CD). To install OzOs onto your hard drive, click on the install icon on the ibox (the e "quick launcher bar") and press enter if it asks for a password - (there is no password for the Live version). More detailed installation and configuration guides are here.
An OzOS Live CD can also be used as an all-in-one tool, since liveCD includes among the usual GNU/Linux tools to deal with partitions and filesystems, gParted and TestDisc, two precious applications to visualize, change, edit or restore your hard drives, from simple resize of partitions to a full partitions table recovery or partition imaging.
Finally, and since Oz tries to be different and think of the future, this is one of the few distro that starts with a 64bit release. (Eh! this is Linux, 2008, right?)
A 32bit version is also available - use this for machines with older processors.
