nThis page is an evolving reference to netbooks/umpcs currently on the market with specific reference to their individual features relevant to Linux. It isn't meant to be a guide or a How-To by itself. The idea is to become familiar enough with the technical details of a netbook you are particularly interested and be able to match those specs to particular issues and hacks you might need when installing the Ubuntu-based OzOS. These issues and hacks are discussed in more detail on our main netbook page HERE and in the relevant CafeLinux Forum thread. If anything here doesn't seem "right" to you, or you have experience with OzOS (or any debian- or ubuntu-based distro) on one of these machines, please share the love at the CafeLinux Forums.

ASUS eeePC - 700 series
|
The "original" netbook, or the first of this breed to market, the eeePC 700 series reportedly sold over a million units in its first year. It is still available and popular and is, physically and in terms of hardware "grunt", at the lowest end of scale. |

HP was the second major manufacturer to leap into the netbook market. The HP2133 is a rugged and beautiful little machine that will certainly continue to develop. |

Acer Aspire One
|
Acer joined the netbook rush in July 2008 with its range of shiny, brightly colored Intel Atom based netbooks. Its Linux and Windows versions are clearly differentiated by hardware (RAM and storage) and by price. |
| Processor: | Intel Atom 1.6Ghz |
| RAM: | 512Mb(Linux) or 1Gb (Windows) - expandable to 1.5Gb (Linux) |
| Storage Drive: | SSD 4Gb (Linux) or 120Gb 1.8" HDD (Windows) |
| Default OS: | "Linpus Lite" or Windows XP |
| Wireless Chip: |
Atheros |
| Ubuntu/OzOS Issues: | Needs 'buntu 8.04.1 (Linux kernel 2.6.24.19). Wireless needs latest MADWifi driver. Suspend/Resume and Sound issues remain (esp. microphone). SSD (intel version especially, Sony version is better) is very slow (write times). Standard 3 cell battery gives around 3 hours. |
| OzOS User Feedback: | Aubrey - Xubuntu 8.04.1 plus OzOS desktop is acceptable on the stock Linux version. Hacks for SSD limitations help speed issues a lot. Recommend either "Windows" version or difficult hardware hacks (more RAM, replace slower SSD with fast CF or IDE drive). |
