apt:foo errors

Here's a list of the kind of problems and gotchas that could be encountered using apt:foo.

If your particular problem isn't covered here, please drop into our forums and post a question in the support area.

1. Nothing happens when I click on an "apt:..." link.

2. I get a "404 Page Not Found" error

3. I get an error message that says that "apt" is not associated with any program.

Receiving a Firefox/Iceweasel error message like this:

generally means that the small apturl program is not installed on your system.

You will need to close Firefox and install apturl. Copy the following instructions to a document first.

On most Debian distributions, you can install from your distro's repositories with the command:

apt-get install apturl

(apt-get requires root or "super user" privileges - use "sudo" before the command on Ubuntu-type systems or become root with the command "su" on other debian systems.)

If your repositories don't have a version of apturl, you can get it as a .deb file (a prepacked version compatible with all debian-based distribitions). Here is a link to a .deb file of apturl version 0.1:

ftp.ucsd.edu/mirror/linux/ubuntu/pool/main/a/apturl/apturl_0.1ubuntu2_all.deb

Click on this link and select to have the package opened with the "gdebi" program.

Let it install.

Restart Firefox and go back to the apt:foo page to select a package to install.

4. I get an error message that says the program can't be found

5. The program seems to install OK but there's no menu entry to start it
